What is Oncology?
The term oncology literally means a branch of science that deals with tumors and cancers. The word “onco” means bulk, mass, or tumor while “-logy” means study. What is cancer? Each of the cells of the body has a tightly regulated system that controls their growth, maturity, reproduction and eventual death. Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.
What is Hematology?
Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. It includes problems with the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and the proteins involved in bleeding and clotting (hemostasis and thrombosis). A hematologist is medical doctor who applies this specialized knowledge to treat patients with blood conditions.
